Why August 1 is work-free-day in Katsina – Gov Masari
By Faith Awa Maji, Katsina
KATSINA State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has explained why government decided to declare August 1 every year as work-free day in the area.
“We have chosen 1st of August every year to celebrate because that was the day Katsina pulled out of the Zaria Province and Daura was pulled out of Kano Province, Masari said on Monday at a special prayer session to to commemorate the Muslim Yaumush Shukur (Thanksgiving Day) in Katsina.
“The public holiday of today (yesterday) is coincidence because of the first day of Muharam, the beginning of the Islamic calendar and, normally, most of the states in the northern parts of the country celebrate it.”
He explained that, the policy of the defunct colonial administration was that an area must have a minimum of two emirates before it could head a Province, “and that was why Katsina and Daura were merged to form Katsina Province.
“So, three years ago, Katsina State government signed an Executive Order to declare every 1st of August a work-free-day, to thank Allah for His blessings and bounties to the state.
“And let us remember that one of the lessons of thanksgiving is that when you wake up, you thank your creator for sparing your life because many have died while you’re still alive.
“Within the three years of organising the Thanksgiving, the State has continued to survive through God’s mercy and government has put machinery in place to sustain the annual thanksgiving service” Masari said.
The annual thanksgiving service held at Usman Bin Fodio Jumma’at Mosque Katsina had Emirs of Daura and Katsina present, featured prayers for security stability in the State and country at large.
